Completed Projects – Albania
The Albania Project represents the beginning of the Opera San Giuseppe Association's long journey of humanitarian support. Born in the midst of the post-communist crisis, it led to the construction of a vocational school now managed and funded by the Albanian state.
The context
With the fall of the communist regime in 1991, thousands of people left Albania in search of assistance. In 1993, in response to this crisis, Father Silvano Gobbo founded the OTAA (Operazione Ticinese Aiuti Albania) association to provide immediate humanitarian aid in the form of medicine, food, and clothing.
The birth of the project
- 1994: Presentation of the project to Albanian President Sali Berisha
- 1998: Purchase of the land by the Diocese of Rrëshen
- 2000: Laying of the foundation stone
- 2004: Inauguration of the “San Giuseppe Operaio” Professional School
The institute immediately experienced a large influx of students, so much so that, by 2006, a further expansion was required to add board and lodging facilities.
Project impact
- Vocational training for hundreds of young people
- Countering emigration and promoting local development
- Introduction of technical and craft courses
Project conclusion
Over the years, the school has become a benchmark for education in Albania. Today, it is recognised and fully funded by the Albanian state - a testament to its integrity and the sustainability of its mission.
Final reflection
The Albania Project is concrete proof that well-organised support can lead to lasting development. A story that began by addressing an urgent need has become a symbol of stability for future generations.
