Njombe Aqueduct - Tanzania Project
One of the most significant projects carried out by the Opera San Giuseppe Association is the construction of an aqueduct in Tanzania that today provides drinking water to approximately 41,000 people in 14 villages in the Njombe region.
Villages served by this facility
USALULE, IGAGALA, ULEMBWE, WIKICHI, ITULIKE, NYUMBANITU, MUNGATE, MLEVELA, IGIMA, MHAJI, LUSISI, ITULAHUMBA, LULANZI, MTWANGO.
Each village has a public water distribution point.
The project
Started in 2003 with the collaboration of the diocese of Njombe and a team of Ticino engineers, the project included:
- 2004: Site inspections and technical studies
- 2008: Construction and inauguration of the first water facilities
- 2009-2012: Completion of the water network
The aqueduct has an 80-km-long pipeline and a 230-km distribution network.
Project objectives
- To ensure continuous access to drinking water
- To reduce diseases caused by contaminated water
- To improve hygiene and public health
- To promote local autonomy via management committees
Current maintenance
Today, the diocese of Njombe and Opera San Giuseppe support the costs of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance:
- Fault repair
- Periodic cleaning of the water facilities
- Technical updates and training for local staff
Why support the project?
Water is the essence of life. The continuity of this essential service depends on the generosity of donors. Even a small contribution can help maintain a water network that saves lives every day.
Thanks
Thank you to those who continue to believe in this project. Every contribution has made a future possible for girls and boys who had lost all hope.
