Multipurpose Hall - Tanzania project

In the village of Mdzombe, Tanzania, 144 children attend an elementary school without a cafeteria. Thanks to the commitment of the Diocese of Njombe and the support of the Opera San Giuseppe Association, a project for a multipurpose hall was born: a space where children can eat and also participate in community activities in a safe environment.

The context

The school is located 10 km from the diocesan headquarters. The total area of the school grounds is approximately 60 hectares. Until now, meals were eaten outdoors, regardless of the weather.

Project development

  • 2022: Completion of the roof structure
  • 2023: Roofing work completed
  • 2024: Paving and first use for a student ceremony
  • 2025: Work begins on a kitchen adjacent to the communal living space

Goals

  • Providing a safe environment for school meals
  • Creating a space for community meetings and events
  • Installing a kitchen to complement the canteen service
  • Promoting dignity and well-being for students and their families
  • October 2022

Thanks to donations, the roof structure of the hall was completed.

  • February 2023

The work to complete the actual roof has been completed.

  • September 2024

Flooring work is underway, and the hall was used for the first time for the awards ceremony for 55 secondary school students, with the participation of parents and family members.

However, the structure is not yet complete: windows and doors are still missing, and donations are still needed for their completion.

  • March 2025

The hall has been completed, and in the future it is planned to set up an adjacent kitchen for use as a school canteen.

Challenges to overcome

  • Doors, windows and a kitchen are still required
  • Need for additional funds for completion
  • Need to prevent any deterioration of the existing structures already built

The benefits

Once completed, the multipurpose hall will become the heart of school and community life in Mdzombe, directly benefiting over 140 children and their families. The project aims to become a model that can be replicated in other areas of the diocese.

Future prospects

With the completion of the multipurpose hall and the addition of a kitchen, Mdzombe School will be able to offer:

  • Adequate safe spaces for meals and school activities.
  • A more dignified environment for the 144 students and their families.
  • A functional and sustainable structure in the long term.
